Craig was a cousin by marriage. Jen was a Howell...my wife, Sue, was a Howell. Little did Craig and I know that when you married into the Howells, you married into a family that absolutely loved visiting and was always, always the last to leave any gathering, oftentimes after already saying several goodbyes. He and I and my ex-sister-in-law spent many hours by front doors, in mud rooms, vestibules, (well...you get the point) commiserating about why did they say goodbye and we are still standing here waiting? So, we collectively came up with a little wager, now that I think about it, probably instigated by Craig. He pulled a dollar out of his wallet and said whenever we are at a gathering and standing here waiting, whoever gets to leave first gets to keep the dollar. Let me tell you, as long as he was alive, he and I never got to keep that dollar. When I heard of his passing the first thing that came to mind, as much as I hate to see the way it happened, that he won, I could see him standing there looking down at me laughing his sarcastic laugh and saying, "Aha, gothcha, I finally got to keep the dollar!!!" Well, my friend, spend it wisely. You certainly worked hard to get it. Maybe some day we'll get to stand around and laugh about it again. Heaven doesn't know what they are in for. 😉
