Penelope “Penny” Ann (Briggs) Rice of Scarborough, Maine, passed away on Wednesday, April 17 at the age of 69. Penny was born in Ipswich, MA on October 29, 1954 to Wayne Folsom Briggs and Priscilla Ann (Tozier) Briggs. She grew up in Belgrade, Maine, and later Gorham, Maine, where she graduated from Gorham High School. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine, as well as her Master’s of Science in Nursing from California State University Long Beach.
As a dedicated registered nurse, nurse practitioner, and nursing professor, Penny devoted her life and career to the care and education of others. Penny began her career as a nurse at the Veteran’s Hospital in Long Beach, California. She went on to become a professor of nursing at California State University Long Beach, and then Southern Maine Community College. Penny also worked as a nurse in various capacities at Maine Medical Center for over twenty years. She was beloved by her patients, students, children, and all who knew her. Penny will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Penny is predeceased by her parents Wayne and Priscilla. She is survived by her daughters, Leah Paige Rice and Haley Maris Rice, and brother Gary Briggs of Falmouth.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 1 from 4-6PM followed by a service at 6PM at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland.
